A day sail typically runs six to eight hours, departing Airlie Beach marina in the morning and returning in the late afternoon. Most vessels reach Whitehaven Beach as part of the itinerary. The ceremony usually happens at anchor near the beach, either on the vessel or on the sand itself. A day sail works well for couples who want simplicity or have guests who cannot commit to multiple nights, though it gives you perhaps three to four hours at or near the beach before the return journey begins.

The overnight elopement

The overnight charter is the stronger format for the Whitsundays. Most private elopement charters run two to three nights, anchoring in a different location each evening. A two-night minimum is typical if Whitehaven Beach is part of the itinerary.

A two-night overnight elopement looks something like this: board in the afternoon, sail to the first anchorage, dinner on board. Day two: sail to Whitehaven Beach, ceremony in the morning when the light is cleanest, lunch at anchor, snorkelling on the reef, anchorage in a private bay for the evening. Day three: a final morning swim, slow sail back to Airlie Beach by early afternoon.

What makes the overnight format exceptional is the privacy. The bays accessible from anchor are completely inaccessible from shore. By evening, most day-tripper vessels have returned to Airlie Beach. You are at anchor in a bay surrounded by island bushland, with the Coral Sea in every direction.

Catamarans are the most popular choice for overnight elopements: stable, spacious, with private en-suite cabins for two to eight guests and a separate crew cabin. Monohull sailing yachts also suit couples who want a more traditional sailing experience.

Whitehaven Beach: the ceremony location most couples choose

Whitehaven Beach is a seven-kilometre stretch of sand on Whitsunday Island. The sand is 98 percent pure silica, brilliant white and cool even in the sun. At the northern end, Hill Inlet creates a tidal swirl of turquoise water and white sand that changes with every tide cycle. It is largely inaccessible except by boat.

For an elopement ceremony, most couples anchor off the southern end, which is calmer and more sheltered. The ceremony can take place on the vessel at anchor, or on the beach itself via tender. Both are genuinely beautiful. The light is best in the morning, before the sun is directly overhead, and before the day-tripper vessels arrive from Airlie Beach.

Hill Inlet lookout is a short walk through rainforest from the beach. The view from above, looking down at the swirling tidal pattern of the inlet with the Coral Sea on the other side, is one of the more quietly remarkable things you can see in Australia.

When to go: seasons and timing

Sailing conditions in the Whitsundays are generally reliable from May through September, with steady south-easterly trade winds. The Whitsunday Passage is well sheltered by the island chain. For photographers, the light in the Whitsundays is particularly good in the morning hours from May through August.
